Lydenberg, Hopper and Beals general correspondence, 1926-1957, (bulk 1934-1954).

Records consist of general library correspondence relating to the Research Library (or Reference Department) and Branch Libraries (or Circulation Department), including letters concerning acquisitions, acknowledgements, complaints, reports and memoranda from staff members and the Special Investigator's Office. There are also files containing correspondence with various federal, state and local governmental agencies and other public and private libraries. In addition to this series of amalgamated Director's Office records, smaller separate records series exist for the three individual Directors: Lydenberg, Hopper and Beals.

Harry Miller Lydenberg (1874-1960) was the third director of the New York Public Library, from 1934 to 1941. Prior to becoming director, he worked at the Library for nearly forty years including serving as the administrative assistant to John Shaw Billings, the first director, in 1899, Chief Reference Librarian from 1908 to 1927, and assistant director from 1928 to 1934.
